Heaven Help Me!

On Friday I had the experience of trying to deal with truck problems all by myself. And let me tell you, it's not something anyone should have to do by themselves. The kids didn't have school so Colleen invited my kids over to their houses to play while Heber and Josh were at pre-school. Vern came home Wednesday night for a meeting on Thursday morning. And was flying out Friday afternoon.
Vern left for the airport and I went to go get Heber and the other two boys that I pick up from pre-school and I noticed that the battery light was on. GREAT!! I knew it was the alternator. So I call Vern(who is in Denver by now, at the airport). He was so frustrated that he was just in Denver and couldn't come back down here to fix it for me.

I was idlingly in front of the house they have pre-school in and in the back of my mind, I kept hearing don't turn the truck off. And did I listen? Of course not. I turned it off and when the boys were loaded and ready to go the truck was not. It wouldn't even turn over. So I had Heber's teacher come out and help me jump the truck. It started up a little while later and we were off. I was praying so hard the whole way back. And as we were on Powers Blvd., the gauges on the dashboard died. That's when you know that you don't have very much longer to get anywhere because it will die any minute.

Luckily, Heavenly Father watched out for me and we were able to get the first boy dropped off and as slowly as I could, we headed back over to the Conlin's. While I was driving, I was racking my brain trying to figure out who could help me fix the truck. I pulled into their driveway and got Josh out and went to go get the other kids so that we could go. And as I'm rounding everyone up, the truck dies. FABULOUS!! At least I was in their driveway and not on the road somewhere. Colleen went and got Adam and he helped me jump the truck. (Once again.) While I was there, I called Vern and asked him for our neighbors number and called him. I told him what happened and he told me that he could come and fix it for me. That was a relief. A huge burden off of my shoulders. And of course my emotions start going and I can't help crying.

The truck get started once again and we are off. Not even a mile away and the gauges die again. Oh please, let us get home. And as I turn on to our street it dies ot the top of the hill. Without the battery, nothing works. The steering wheel siezes up and it wont even turn. I was close enough to the sidewalk that I could pull over and just have everyone bailout and walk home. The kids thought this was a crazy idea, to have to walk home. Oh brother. Goofy kids.

We get down to the house and I go over to the neighbors and ask her if she will come up to the top of the street and help me jump the truck AGAIN so that it's down at the house and not on the street. We get it jumped and down at the house. Our other neighbor came over a little while later and he got it fixed in less than an hour.
WOOHOO!! My truck works once again! This is the third alternator in three years and we are going to find out what needs to be done about that. Because this is ridiculous.

I'm very grateful for the wonderful people that Heavenly Father has placed in my life and helped me out. What a blessing it is to have such great people in my life. Thank You all again.

  1. On days like this, when Adam was out here working and we were in WA, I'd sit there thinking over and over, "I DID NOT sign up for this!" You held it together so great Jen! Count down is on, it's almost over. We are praying for the job here, and SO glad the truck is up and running again. We have the same problem with the van's breaks. It feels like they need replacing on a yearly basis, while the Subaru has needed them replaced once I think in all the years we've had it! Cars! Sheesh!

  4. I'm so sorry! It's great to have good neighbors with skills! That actually happened to me in Utah (without Dan). I was on Main Street in Bountiful with my Grandpa's truck and Dallin and Garrett were sound asleep in the back and it stalled in the middle of the road. I got out and stood at the back of the truck while all these "nice Mormons" (it was a Sunday) flew past me. A nasty guy and his girlfriend stopped and helped me push it off the road, then Ryan came and jumped it, and it died on I-15 with Ryan following me. He turned his car around on the shoulder into oncoming traffic (it was at night and there were cars cruising past us with the kids in the back of his car) and jumped it again. We got off the freeway and took little streets home where we had to jump it one more time to get home. It was INSANE! I thought we were going to get hit head on by the cars on the freeway and die a horrible messy death, but the Lord was watching out for us. So, in short, I know how you feel!! I'm glad you are safe!!!
